Bonnie Baxter is an artist, educator and director of Atelier du Scarabée, which she founded in 1982. She has maintained an extensive exhibition record for 3 decades. She has created installation and public art works as well as large-scale pieces in Print Media and Sculpture.
Her current work has expanded to include performance, video and electronic imaging. Her web site entitled Eros / Ecstasy / Death is a reflection on non-rational states. Her work addresses issues dealing with intersections of representation and the construction and deconstruction of identity in a social, psychological and physiological context.
Presently she is working within a collective of Concordia students named TCHOU, which was formed with the objective to create art projects through community action. TCHOU’s work will be presented in the context of the International Symposium and Exhibition entitled Mythologie des Lieux held in St. Jérôme, Québec September 1999

ARTIST STATEMENT / TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:

In my professional practice, I am committed to an interdisciplinary approach. Although my work
has evolved from a primary grounding in printmaking, my current focus is the intersection(s) of representation, critical theory and technology.

My personal practice seems to be evolving again to include a more direct accountability of the interaction between art production, politics and the communities
that could most benefit from the cultural expertise of the artist.

As such, I am becoming more interested in direct and experiential interaction with the viewer, especially as the viewer becomes a participant, alive in cultural production. My teaching mirrors and reinforces this evolution of my art practice.

I have faith in the wisdom of student centered teaching.
I favor a pedagogy that focuses on the relationship between art and societal values
as it questions the context of production and cultural meanings.
To this end helping students create art informed with the knowledge
that artists are part of the social, economical, political and cultural context which they influence and which in part influences them.
My desire is to motivate students artistically and intellectually so that they might find their own distinctive voice in the construction of meaning in art.

And that they might recognize how art impacts on society and how art making is a laboratory for the understanding of one's self and one's relationship to the world.
